The addition of cider sounds like a great idea. Try some cinnamon (stick) and star anise as spicing, too. Something else: I wouldn't use Nutella jars. They don't close tightly and have cardboard in the lid that will attract moisture and you can't sterilise them.
What I will never get is this country's propensity to serve sweet apple sauce with pork or other meat. It goes completely against my European palate.
